A REASSESSMENT OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CATHEDRAL AT GARÐAR, GrEENLAND
to keep up to date. It would be natural to
combine new archaeological investiga-
tions of the cathedral with investigations
of the midden deposits to see what the lat-
ter can say about the economic develop-
ment over time.
In short, I believe that the cathe-
dral can still yield much information
which can add to our understanding of
Garðar - both as a farm and as a bish-
op’s seat. In order to exploit this potential
we need a renewed archaeological inter-
est in the cathedral at Garðar, preferably
in conjunction with other archaeological
excavations and certainly with midden
excavations. After many years of relative-
ly little archaeological investigation, new
excavations could further our knowledge
of the site considerably. As the largest
Norse farm in Greenland, its importance
in the life of the settlements must have
been substantial, and a better understand-
ing of Garðar is likely to provide a better
understanding of the Norse Greenlandic
settlements in general.
