prepared during the AD 934 eruption and
completed soon after (Guðrún Larsen
and Sigurður Þórarinsson 1983)!
Undoubtedly there are more Iron Age
cemeteries buried under tephra and soil
in Iceland, but they are difficult to find in
those same areas where soil formation is
rapid, burying any trace of archaeologi-
cal remains. The volcanoes may thus
have helped to preserve stupendous
examples of untouched cemetery sites,
but they will be far more difficult to
locate than in areas where the remains of
the barrows can still be seen on the sur-
face. Recent advances in making location
models, however, and better understand-
ing of the necrography of Iron Age cem-
eteries in Iceland, will undoubtedly help
in the search for these well hidden plac-
es.
