Reykjavík Grapevine - 15.07.2016, Blaðsíða 2
You know what’s fresh, this month,
readers? Do you? No? Well: let us fix
that for you. This month, we published
a brand new magazine called “Best Of
Reykjavík 2016.” It has a fetching pink
cover, depicting a hand doing the in-
ternationally accepted gang sign for
“NICE!” Inside are the combined re-
sults of an almighty to-and-fro be-
tween Grapevine’s various writers,
critics, contributors, friends & fami-
lies, addressing such burning issues
as: Where is the best veggie burger in
Reykjavík? What’s the best bookstore?
And if you have a free day and a car,
where should you take it? So, not only
is the magazine itself a fresh appear-
ance, but everything in there is pretty
fresh, if we do say so ourselves. Also,
it’s free. YOU’RE WELCOME!

The Hot Button issue this issue is
the church. For a long time, Iceland’s
national church fell squarely on the
side of authority and the status quo:
loathed by humanists and staunchly
defended by the right, often cited in
arguments against immigration when
someone is trying to contend that “Ice-
land is a Christian country.” All that
changed when two ministers opted
to provide church sanctuary to some
now-deported asylum seekers. This
effectively turned Iceland into Bizar-
roland, with humanists now prais-
ing and conservatives criticising the
national church, even de-registering
from the church in protest. The event
has raised a discussion around the
church’s role in society, and even the
meaning of being a Christian, and it’s
for that reason that the church is this
issue’s hot button.
