the wolf at once.
In a version traditional in
Britain in the nineteenth centu-
ry the tale ended as nastily as
can be imagined. The wolf put
the grandmother's blood in bot-
tles, and made the little girl
drink it.
In the version of the Brothers
Grimm the wolf fell asleep after
having eaten grandmother and
the girl. A huntsman passing by
heard the wolf snoring and went
into the house. He guessed what
had happened and ripped open
the wolf's stomach with a pair of
scissors. Out jumped the little
