The Grund Lutheran Church, Municipality of Argyle, Manitoba, built in 1889 is the oldest Icelandic church in Canada that is still standing and still in use.
The Grund church was declared a Manitoba Cultural Heritage
Historical Resource by the Government of Manitoba, Historical
Resources Branch in 1989. This church represents an important
monument to the History and culture of the Icelandic pioneers and
their descendants in Canada and is of particular importance in the
history of Manitoba.
Some repairs and upgrades
were made to the church at
the time that it was declared
a historic site. Unfortunately,
both time and Canada’s harsh
climate have resulted in the
need for for further repair to the
infrastructure of the building.
Donald Gudnason of
Baldur, Manitoba coordinates
a local committee that has
identified the needs for repairs
to the building and is also
attempting to raise funds for
the repairs.
Repairs needed (include a
new roof, siding and repair to
the steeple) could cost $80,000
or more!
$16,000 for painting the church. A grant of $8,000 was received,
which covers half of the expense.
$5,000 estimated for repairs to the steeple.
Recent wind damage to the shingles needs to be replaced.
Donald has contacted the Insurance company to see if there might
be coverage. He is still waiting for an answer.
Some of the wood siding on the church needs to be replaced.
We need more financial help in order to start these repairs to the
church. Donations may be made to: R.M. of Argyle (Grund Church).
All donations of $20 or more receive a tax receipt. Mailing address
is: R. M. of Argyle, Box 40, Baldur, Manitoba R0K 0B0.
Thank you for your support.
