Look closer – crows’ nests can
be found atop church steeples
as well as ships’ masts. A pair
of crows have returned to their
perch on the steeple of the
Gimli Unitarian Church (also
known as the A-Spire Theatre)
to raise the next generation of
their cawing species. Church
officials are grateful it’s only
a pair and not a murder of
crows, as a flock of such birds
is properly known, since
even a pair has a murderous
impact on the structure,
leading to water leakage
in the steeple. An earlier
nest was removed from
the steeple by the local fire
department but the crows will
not be deterred. Many Gimli
residents are fond of seeing the
crows’ nest, perhaps because
the sight of the birds reminds
them of Huginn and Muninn
(Thought and Memory), the
two ravens who, according
to the Eddas, flew across the
world and returned to whisper
their knowledge into the ears of
the Norse god Óðinn.
