aluminum oxide tower; The Chapel, a water well and an electricity mast. Straight
lines characterized the area. The main road, beside the plant underlined the length of
the factory. In a few words; the area suffers from the lack of multiplicity and mystic
and is too homogeneous. Still the area isn’t legible whereas the purpose of lines and
focus points isn’t clear.
The object of the proposition for a new appearance of the plant area is multiple:
1. To be informative by using elements from history and make them visible.
2. By visual intonation, to minimize the length impact of the plant, connect the old
and new elements and generate coherence.
3. Create landscape to form space, in order to underline landmarks intending to form
legibility and mystic.
4. To use elements as water and grass to create multiplicity.
5. Create a balance between esthetic, endurance and utility.
The concept is „Catching paths“. Red lines are laid over the area with the pattern
taken from pathmap. „Alfaraleið“, the vanished path through the lava
„Kapelluhraun“, wreathes along the plant. The red color combines the red color of the
aluminium firm, the Turkian flag – the roots of Barbara, the blood that flowed when
she died and the heat of the lava that once covered the area but later was cleared
away. The three iluminated landmarks, stand for trinity, for example for inherent
needs of modern man; the fortune of spirits, light and water (Figure 3 and 4).
Conclusions
My conclusion is that with regard to size, forms and purpose the Chapel is providing a
charming contrast. By using modern material, technical solutions, symbolic and open-
minded approach it is possible to improve the landscape and give it a multiple
function. It has, thuds, been possible to use both old and new elements in the
