afrikas, soweit sie im Bereiche eben jener Westströmung
liegen, eine nicht ungewöhnliche Erscheinung darstellt (all-
ein auf den Britischen Inseln wurde die Art nicht weniger
als 48 oder 49 mal nachgewiesen). Es darf daher wohl
fiir sicher gelten, dass es der iiber dem Ozean wehende
standige Westwind ist, der Vögeln von der Art unserer
Reiher, die an sich zu den weniger guten Fliegern rech-
nen, die Uberwindung solcher weiten Meeresstrecken er-
möglicht.
Wie bei Ardea cinerea beschránken sich die Fálle des
Vorkommens von Botaurus lentiginosus zur Hauptsache
auf die Herbst- und Wintermonate (meist Oktober/No-
vember), was seinen Grund zu einem Teil in biologischen
Eigentumlichkeiten des Vogels selber haben diirfte (un-
gerichtetes Streichen nach Beendigung des Fortpflan-
zungsgescháftes). Daneben spielt jedoch auch die sprung-
hafte Zunahme der Sturmháufigkeit in dieser Jahreszeit
— und damit die erhöhte Gefahr des Abgetriebenwerdens
— zweifellos eine entscheidende Rolle fiir das geháufte
Auftreten der Art gerade in diesen Monaten.
Ausser den schon genannten Vogelarten sind es beson-
ders der Grosse Brachvogel (Numenius arquata) und der
Kiebitz (VaneTlus vanellus), die verdienen, sowohl ihrer
charakteristischen Erscheinung als auch ihrer relativen
Háufigkeit wegen aus der Reihe der gelegentlichen Be-
sucher hervorgehoben zu werden, ohne dass damit deren
Zahl erschöpft wáre. Beide Vögel zeigen sich, wie die
Mehrzahl der Angehörigen dieser Gruppe, vornehmlich
im Spátjahre und im Winter, was dem Kiebitz seinen is-
lándischen Namen isalcráka, d. i. Eiskráhe1), eingetragen
hat; doch sieht man sie, wennschon viel weniger zahlreich,
auch zu anderen Zeiten des Jahres in Island. Die Frage
nach der Herkunft muss in jedem Falle insoweit offen
bleiben, als eine Entscheidung zwischen Skandinavien und
den Britischen Inseln schwer getroffen werden kann;
