Thema beigetragen wurde, war schwerlich geeignet, die
klaffende Líicke in unserem Wissen auszufiillen. Wenn
man sich jedoch vor Augen hált, dass Island in touristi-
scher Beziehung im Winter ein ausserordentlich schwieri-
ges Land ist, das nicht nur in körperlicher Hinsicht hohe
und höchste Anforderungen an den Reisenden stellt, son-
dem auch ganz betráchtliche Opfer an Zeit und Geld ver-
langt, ohne dabei im Ausgleich durch die Wahrschein-
lichkeit wichtiger wissenschaftlicher Neuentdeckungen zu
locken, wird man den derzeitigen Stand unserer Kennt-
nisse, soweit das Wintervogelleben in Betracht kommt,
begreiflich finden. Daraus folgt von selbst, dass es sich
auch bei den nachstehenden Darlegimgen, die sich im
wesentlichen auf meine eigenen, uber sechs Winter ge-
henden Beobachtungen griinden, um nichts anderes als
einen ersten Versuch handeln kann, einige charakteri-
stische Ziige eben dieses bislang so sehr vernachlássigten
Teilgebietes der islándischen Vogelkunde herauszustellen
und festzuhalten.
Allgemein biologisch gesehen sind es vor allem zwei
Vorgánge, in denen sich das Herannahen des Winters in
der islándischen Vogelwelt ankiindigt: die Abwanderung
aller nicht speziell eingepassten Formen aus den höher
gelegenen Gegenden des Landes zur Kiiste und der Zu-
sammenschluss zahlreicher Einzelindividuen gleicher oder
verwandter Arten zu grösseren Gesellschaften, die
Schwarmbildung. Die erstere Erscheinung ist vornehmlich
ernáhrungsbiologisch bedingt, insofern sie an Stelle der
bisherigen, wáhrend des Winters unzugánglichen Náhr-
gebiete des Binnenlandes auf die Ausnutzung des gewalti-
gen Nahrungsreservoirs abzielt, das den Vögeln zu allen
Jahreszeiten in den Organismenbestánden der Litoralzone
dargeboten wird. Daneben sind natúrlich auch klimatische
Faktoren als solche mit im Spiele, wobei die mit dem Ein-
tritt der kálteren Jahreszeit vom Hochlande herabstei-
genden Isothermen die Vögel gewissermassen vor sich her
