Ólafsson betont worden. Hin und wieder werden auch
neugeborene Schafe getötet und verzehrt (individuelles
Spezialistentum?), wobei die Raben mitunter schon wáh-
rend des Geburtsaktes mit der Mahlzeit beginnen sollen.
Die Nachgeburt wird jedenfalls regelmássig von ihnen ge-
fressen, was bei den grossen Schafherden der Insel (1935
ca 650000 Stiick) zeitweise von Bedeutung sein kann. Die
sicherste Nahrungsquelle, aus der die Mehrzahl der Vögel
vor allem wáhrend der Wintermonate schöpft, bleibt je-
doch der Meeresstrand mit seinen reichen Organismenbe-
stánden. Hier sind es in erster Linie gewisse Mollusken-
arten, wie Mytilus edulis, Cyprina islandica, Pecten islan-
dicus, Cardium groenlandicum u. C. cíliatum, die neben
mancherlei anderen Meerestieren (so werden beispielsweise
Seeigel mit besonderer Vorliebe gefressen) den Haupt-
bestandteil ihrer Nahrung ausmachen.
Anm. 1. Bei Annaherung an den besetzten Horst, in dessen Um-
gebung gewöhnlich einer der Vögel von einem erhöhten Punkte aus
Wache halt, zeigen die Tiere ein ihdividuell ganz verschiedenes Ver-
halten. In einzelnen Fállen fliegen beide Vögel ohne zu rufen schon
auf grössere Entfernung ab und kehren erst nach Stunden an den
Horst zuriick. Meistens gebárden sie sich jedoch sehr erregt und um-
fliegen den Störenfried mit schnellen, eigenartig zappelnden Fliigel-
schlágen in einem Abstand von oftmals nur wenigen Metern. Dabei
lassen sie fortgesetzt ihre Stimmen hören und halten ihr Kopf- und
Halsgefieder gestráubt, was ihnen im Fluge ein fremdartiges Aus-
sehen verleiht. Im Sitzen stellen sie den Schwanz hoch und spreitzen
die Schwanzfedern; die Flugel halten sie vom Körper ab und lassen
sie hángen. Zweimal konnte ich unter solchen Umstánden ein auffál-
liges Benehmen des Paares beobachten. Beide Vögel liessen sich in
etwa 20 m Entfernung vom Nest an einem Abhang nieder und be-
gannen sichtlich in stárkster Erregung — gleichsam in einer Mischung
von Wut und Verlegenheit, wie ich damals fur mich notierte — Gras
und Moos mit dem Schnabel auszurupfen und stárkere Birkenstámm-
chen mit aller Kraft zu bearbeiten. Anschliessend setzten sie sich
