im Verbreitungsgebiet von islandicci und linariai) (aber nur in den
nördlicheren Gegenden) noch neben der Ausgangsform vorkommt, ist
sie in den ostpalaarktischen und nordamerikanischen Tundrengebie-
ten zur Alleinherrschaft gelangt. Holbölli, die auch in den nördlichen
Gegenden von linaria (und islandica?) auftritt, scheint dagegen kein
einheitliches Brutgebiet zu haben, da iiberall auch kleinschnábelige
Stiicke vorzukommen scheinen.2)
Vergleichen wir nun z. B. die von B i r d fiir sichere exilipes ge-
wonnenen Masse mit seinen fur islándische Wintervögel (isl. „exili-
pes“J ermittelten Werten, so ergibt sich, wie die nachfolgende Gegen-
uberstellung zeigt, zwischen den beiden insofern ein sehr deutlicher
Unterschied, als die Islánder merklich grösser sind; im weiblichen
Geschlecht findet nicht einmal eine Uberschneidung der Variations-
breiten statt. Dieser Umstand hátte an sich bereits Zweifel dariiber
aufkommen lassen mussen, ob es sich in beiden Fállen tatsáchlich um
ein und dieselbe Form handle. Zugunsten der Salomonse n’schen
Auffassung spricht es weiter, dass die Masse fur exilipes weitgehend
mit denen von flammea, die fiir islándische „exilipes“ mit denen von
islandica ubereinstimmen (Vergl. die beigefiigte Aufstellung nach
Sal.).

Schliesslich konnte ich auch an meinem eigenen Material, was
Form und Grösse der Tiere anbetrifft, keinen Unterschied zwischen
islándischen Brutvögeln und den in Frage stehenden hellen Winter-
stucken finden. Alles das scheint die Richtigkeit der Anschauung vom
Mutantencharakter der exilipes-Form zu erweisen, sodass wir also in
den B i r d’schen „exilipes" von Island im Grunde nichts anderes als
islandica selber vor uns hátten, die sich in neuem Gewande prásen-
tiert. Fiir das Verháltnis exilipes zu flammea gilt naturgemáss das
gleiche.
Einzuwenden bliebe gegen S a l.s Hypothese, dass es bisher nicht
gelungen ist, die hellen Exemplare briitend in Island nachzuweisen;
die islándische Population macht vielmehr, wenn man der Beurteilung
ausschliesslich sichere Brutvögel zugrunde legt, einen ziemlich homo-

den hátten. Er betrachte dies als einen „sehr bemerkenswerten Ver-
such, die Schwierigkeiten zu lösen“ und halte es fiir durchaus mög-
lieh, dass S a 1. mit seiner Ansicht völlig im Rechten sei.
