kerer, gelöster, nicht so streng an ein festes Schema ge-
bunden und der individuellen Variation infolgedessen ein
ungleich weiteres Feld eröffnet als bei Tr.tr. troglodytes.
Tatsachlich ist der Unterschied zwischen den Gesángen
der einzelnen Vögel so bedeutend, dass man zwischen
Liedern, die denen der Nominatform sehr nahe kommen,
und solchen, die kaum noch eine Áhnlichkeit mit ihnen
haben, alle erdenklichen Ubergánge und Zwischenstufen
finden kann. Ausserdem ist die Lánge der Lieder sehr ver-
schieden; die meisten von ihnen sind lánger, einige sogar
viel lánger als die der gewöhnlichen europáischen Form.
Endlich sind auch Vortrag und Klangcharakter des Ge-
sanges bei islandicus, wiewohl klar, silberhell und schmet-
ternd, dennoch nicht ganz so forsch, entschieden und kraft-
voll-gedrángt, ja, ich bin versucht zu sagen, so stramm
militárisch, wie bei britischen Vögeln und solchen des kon-
tinentalen Europas. Das Ganze ist auf einen weicheren,
mehr liedartigen Grundton abgestimmt, wenngleich das
typische Kolorit des Zaunkönigsgesanges erhalten bleibt.
Im einzelnen besteht der Gesang aus einer Reihe kur-
zer Schlagstrophen (meist 2—3), die durch eine Anzahl
dazwischenliegender, mehr zwitschernder als flötender
Töne verbunden werden. Durch unterschiedliche Höhe, Be-
wertung und Betonung dieser Noten kommt besonders im
Eingange ein eigentumlich abgerissener, um nicht zu sagen
abgehackter, stotternder Rhythmus in das Lied, der teil-
weise so ausgeprágt ist, dass er den Gesang in einzelne,
durch kurze „Kunstpausen“ von einander getrennte Ab-
schnitte zerlegt. Der fiir die Nominatform so bezeichnende
Schnurrer oder Roller findet sich nur andeutungsweise
bei einzelnen S S, in der Mehrzahl der Fálle fehlt er ganz.
Die erwáhnten Schmetter- oder Schlagtouren notierte ich
mit dzidzidzidzidzi..., djidjidjidjidji..., zzzzz..., dididi-
didi..., dillillillilli... usw., wáhrend hinsichtlich der „Zwi-
schentöne" noch zu sagen bliebe, dass diese besonders gegen
das Ende des Liedes zu grosser Schönheit und Fiille ge-
steigert werden können und dann entfernte Anklánge an
den „Uberschlag“ der Mönchsgrasmiicke zeigen. — Die
