dass er sich nicht beliebig wieder von ihnen lösen kann, auch wenn
die Umstánde dies erfordern. Wagt er sich daher, wie dies zuweilen
vorkommt, an wasserbewohnende Beutetiere, denen er grössen—bzw.
gewichtsmássig nicht gewachsen ist, anders gesagt, mit denen er
sich nicht in die Luft zu erheben vermag (Seehunde, schwere Lachse,
erwachsene Eiderenten auf tiefem Wasser), geht der Kampf nicht
selten zu ungunsten unseres Vogels aus, oder endet mit dem Tode
beider Partner.
Anm. 2. Fliegende Vögel scheint der Adler im allgemeinen nicht
zu erbeuten; insbesondere wendet er den schnell fliegenden Enten-
arten gegeniiber mehr eine Úberraschungs- und Ermudungstaktik an,
indem er sie durch sein plötzliches Erscheinen zum Tauchen zwingt
und so lange jagt, bis sie ermatten und ergriffen werden können.
Das Opfer wird alsdann an einen geeigneten Platz in der Náhe ge-
tragen, an Brust und Bauch notdurftig gerupft und anschliessend
— nicht selten noch bei lebendigem Leibe — verzehrt. Dabei pflegt
der Adler gewöhnlich in der Náhe des Afters einzugehen und zu-
náchst den Enddarm herauszureissen.

Sehr seltener Gast; nur ein Vorkommen: Fagurhólsmýri
(öræfi), 7. Juni 1941 ein Vogel tot aufgefunden (Beleg-
exemplar Mus. Rvk).
59. Pandion haliaetus (L.), Fischadler,
isl. fiskiörn.
Unterart: Pandion h. haliaetus (L.).
Gelegentlicher Gast, der bisher funfmal fúr Island nach-
gewiesen wurde: Viðey (nahe Rvk), Ende Okt. 1932; Sel-
tjarnarnes, Sept. 1933; Fagurhólsmýri, 6. Dez. 1940 (tot
aufgef.); Efri-Steinsmýri (Meðalland), 1940 od. 41 (wann?)
u. Grímsstaðir (Mývatn), 24. Mai 1942. In den beiden er-
sten Fállen handelte es sich um Jungvögel.
Ciconia ciconia (L.), Weisser Storch,
isl. storkur.
Soll zufolge Hantzsch (p. 222), der sich auf die Aussage eines
einheimischen Vogelkenners stiitzt, im Fruhjahr 1856 in einem ein-
zelnen Stiick auf der Insel Grímsey (N) beobachtet worden sein.
