Seengebiete, die Unterláufe der grossen Fliisse und gar-
nicht so sehr selten auch die Meereskiiste. Als Brutbe-
ginn wird von verschiedenen Autoren (Hantzsch, Har-
tert, Jourdain) die zweite Junihálfte angegeben, doch
fanden Congreve u. Freme (p. 222) schon am 27.
Mai bebriitete Eier. Die Anzahl im Gelege betrágt gewöhn-
lich 7—12, zuweilen mehr Stiick; die Fárbung ist gelblich-
weiss bis rahmfarben. 9 Eier messen und wiegen 70,5—
64,5X46,5—44,5 mm = 6,50—5,70 g; Durchschnitt 67,0
X45,6 mm = 6,08 g.
Die nicht sehr laute Stimme des $ wird dreisilbig be-
schrieben und mit ba-o-bab, darr-dorr-darr oder auch ga-
gagag wiedergegeben, doch scheint sie vielfach abzuán-
dern. Aus eigener Erfahrung kenne ich diese Rufe nicht;
die Exemplare, denen ich begegnete, verhielten sich ohne
Ausnahme stumm. Die 2 2 lassen knarrende und — in
argerlicher Erregung — zischende Laute hören.
Nahrung wohl so gut wie ausschliesslich animalisch,
doch sollen nach Hantzsch zur Zeit der Sommermauser
auch Wasserpflanzen aufgenommen werden. Gefressen
^erden hauptsáchlich Fische (nach Collinge 86,5% der
gesamten Nahrungsmenge), in Island wohl besonders Fo-
rellen und Saiblinge (Sálmo trutta u. alpinus) bis zu einer
Lánge von 34 cm, daneben Krustazeen, Schmetterlings-
raupen, Káfer und Anneliden, doch stehen die entspre-
chenden Untersuchungen fiir Island noch aus.

Die Anerkennung einer grösseren westgrönlándischen Rasse (M.s.
rwjor Schieler) hat sich nicht allgemein durchsetzen können; es
bleibt daher dem wissenschaftlichen Ermessen jedes einzelnen iiber-
lassen, bei Verwendung trinárer Namen entweder Mergus serrator
L. oder Mergus s. serrator L. zu schreiben.
Háufiger, durch ganz Island verbreiteter Brutvogel. —
Strich- und Zugvogel, der die Insel mit einem Teil der
Population um die Monatswende Sept./Okt. verlásst und
gcwöhnlich in der zweiten Aprilhálfte aus seinen Winter-
