interpres zu bezeichnen sein. Die durchschnittlich geringen Flugel-
masse meiner Stiicke könnten in die gleiche Richtung deuten.
Sieben in den Jahren 1932—35 bei Laugarnes (Rvk) erlegte Exem-
plare, die mit einer Ausnahme Wintervögel sind (Nov.—Febr.),
zeigen folgende Masse und Gewichte: 2 $ $ Ges. Lge 212 u. 227;
Flugel 146 u. 153; Schwanz 64 u. 66; Schnabel 22,1 u. 23,2; Lauf
25,4 u. 30,6; Mittelz. m. Kr. 26,5 u. 25,4; Kr. 5,2 u. 5,7 mm. Gew.
112,5 u. 147 g (massig fett u. sehr fett). Der letztere Vogel, erl. 11.
Mai 1933, erwies sich bei der Öffnung als ein wahrer Fettkloss mit
relativ unentwickelten Geschlechtsorganen (Hoden ca 5 und 7 mm

In Island ist der Steinwálzer, áhnlich wie Cálidris ca-
nutus, ein regelmássiger und háufiger Durchzugsvogel,
der die Insel im Friihling und Herbst auf der Wanderung
zu und von seinen grönlándischen Brutplátzen beriihrt.
Dabei geht der Zug ganz iiberwiegend iiber die Kústen der
westlichen Inselhálfte, wáhrend der mittlere Osten und
Nordosten des Landes nur selten von den Vögeln besucht
wird. In Hornafjörður (SE) zieht die Art dagegen regel-
mássig, wennschon nicht gerade zahlreich durch. — Fiir
Akureyri, wo der Steinwálzer bereits unter die wenig
háufigen Arten záhlt, nennt Kr. Geirm. Mitte Mai und
Mitte Aug.—Anfang Sept. als die Zeiten des Hauptdurch-
zuges. Bei Reykjavík sind die Zugverháltnisse indessen
schwieriger zu úbersehen, weil der Steinwálzer im Siid-
westen Islands praktisch Jahresvogel ist (vergl. hierzu im
einzelnen meine Ausfiihrungen in Kap. 6, p. 229), doch
scheinen die Zugzeiten nach meinen Ermittlungen weitge-
hend mit den nordislándischen iibereinzustimmen (Haupt-
durchzug etwa 10.—25. Mai und Mitte Aug.—Mitte Sept.).
Die schon erwáhnte Tatsache, dass Arenaria interpres
in weiten Kustengebieten Siidwest- und Westislands nicht
nur regelmássig als Uberwinterer, sondern auch als Uber-
sommerer — und zwar zahlreich — auftritt, hat offen-
bar dazu verleitet, die Art in allen gebráuchlichen Nach-
schlagewerken ohne weiteren Kommentar als islándischen
Brutvogel zu bezeichnen. Dazu muss aber erláuternd fest-
