Wie schon aus der gegebenen Abgrenzung der Brut-
gebiete erhellt, ist Limosa limosa ein Vogel der ausge-
dehnten Grunmoore und Wiesenlánder in tiefer Lage, wie
sie in Island besonders im Siiden und Westen vorkommen.
Die Ablage der 4 Eier erfolgt Ende Mai oder Anfang Juni;
diese sind auf grunlichem oder bráunlichem Untergrund
mit ziemlich verwaschenen dunkelolivbraunen Oberflek-
ken und tiefer liegenden aschgrauen Schalenflecken ge-
zeichnet, die das Ei oftmals nahezu einfarbig erscheinen
lassen. 23 Stucke messen und wiegen 60,2—52,5X39,5—
36,2 mm = 2,640—1,900 g; Durchschnitt 55,2X38,1 mm
= 2,324 g.
Die charakteristische, weithin hörbare Stimme der Vögel
ist besonders wáhrend des Balzfluges auffállig und wird
in herkömmlicher Weise mit gretta, grutto, djödjo oder
auch wohl delödjoh iibertragen. Ausserdem sind kiebitz-
artige gwiáh und gwieh, ein heiseres gegegág und quiriri
bzw. girioch (Nieth.), sowie eine ganze Reihe kurz
angeschlagener Noten (pit, djod) bekannt geworden. —
Die Nahrung besteht aus Insekten und deren Larven,
ferner Wiármern, Fischlaich und je nach der Gelegenheit
auch aus Mollusken und Krustazeen; fur Island finden
sich speziell Regenwiirmer angegeben.

Sehr seltener Gast; ein Vorkommen: $ juv., Eyrar-
bakki, 2. Nov. 1908 (Belegexempl. Mus. Rvk).
129. Numenius arquata (L.), Grosser Brachvogel,
isl. stóri spói, fjöruspói.
Unterart: N. a. arquata (L.).
Nicht ganz seltener und anscheinend ziemlich regel-
mássiger Wintergast (Sept.—Márz, zuweilen April/Mai),
der gelegentlich in allen Kiistengebieten der Insel beob-
achtet wird. Meist in kleinen Fliigen von etwa 5—10 Vö-
geln, seltener in grossen Scharen auftretend (Gröndal).
