zunahme der Vögel erkennen, weshalb er die islandische Popula-
tion 1930 als H. o. mcdacophaga abtrennte, wobei allerdings anzu-
merken ist, dass nicht alle Fachgenossen diesem Vorgange gefolgt
sind, der Autor es aber spaterhin (1935) selber als fraglich hinge-
stellt hat, ob die Unterschiede bedeutend genug seien, um die Son-
derung aufrecht zu erhalten. Was zunachst den Schnabelbau anbe-
trifft, so habe ich bereits in einer friiheren Arbeit (Verh. Soc. Scient.
Islandica, I, 1935) darauf hingewiesen, dass ich den Unterschied
nicht annahernd so augenfállig hátte finden können wie S a 1. und
daher fur ein entschiedenes Heranrucken der islándischen Rasse an
die Nominatform eintreten musse. Wáhrend S a 1. die Schnabelbreite
in 5 cm Abstand vom Beginn der Stirnbefiederung bei malacophaga
im Durchschnitt zu 4 mm, bei der feinschnábeligeren Nominatform
dagegen nur zu 3 mm ermittelte, fand ich den entsprechenden Wert
an meinem Island-Material aus der Zeit vor dem Kriege zu 2,8 mm;
neuere Messungen an 11 sicheren islándischen Brutvögeln aus Horna-
fjörður (Juni 1949) fiihrten zu dem gleichen Ergebnis (Schnabel-
breite 2,3—3,5 mm, im Durchschnitt 2,9 mm). Auch hinsichtlich des
von S a 1. eingefiihrten sog. Index, der durch Multiplikation von
Schnabelbreite und Schnabelhöhe in 1 cm Abstand von der Spitze
gewonnen wird, kann ich im Gegensatz zu dem Genannten keinen
nennenswerten Unterschied zwischen islándischen Brutvögeln und
solchen der Nominatform finden, wie dies die nachstehenden An-
gaben veranschaulichen mögen;

Abschliessend liesse sich iiber diesen Punkt der Untersuchung sagen,
dass die Schnábel der islándischen Austernfischer nach meinen Be-
funden mit denen der Nominatform ubereinstimmen, weshalb es un-
richtig ist, wenn Steinbacher, Witherby (Br. Hdb., IV, p.
421) u. and. malacophaga als Synonym zu occidentalis stellen; die
islándische Lokalform gehört zu H. ostr. ostralegus und deutet ná-
here Beziehungen zu Skandinavien, nicht zu Grossbritannien, an.
In der Flugellánge besteht nach ubereinstimmenden Messungen
von S a 1. und W i t h e r b y zwischen H. ostr. ostralegus und H. ostr.
occidentalis kaum ein Unterschied; fur $ $ finden sich die Höchst-
werte beider Rassen mit 263 mm angegeben, wáhrend 2 2 der No-
minatform 265, englische Vögel sogar 270 mm erreichen. Bei 270 mm
liegt nach S a 1. indessen auch das Höchstmass fur $ $ und 2 $
der Faeröer-Population, wohingegen Islánder auf 272 bzw. 276 mm
kommen können. Meine eigenen Messungen scheinen das Auftreten
besonders grossfliigeliger Einzelstiicke ($ 277 mm, am Balg 270 mm)
unter den islándischen Austernfischern zu bestátigen; im grossen
und ganzen zeigen jedoch die von mir an islándischen Vögeln ge-
fundenen Masse und Variationsbreiten eine gute Ubereinstimmung
mit den von W i t h e r b y und S a 1. fur occidentalis und die Nomi-
