durften. Die Ablage und Bebriitung erfolgt auf dem blossen
Untergrund, in den die Vögel, sofern die Materialbeschaf-
fenheit dies gestattet, eine kleine Vertiefung kratzen, um
die auf den schmalen Leisten und Simsen der Wánde sehr
ausgesetzten Eier nach Möglichkeit vor dem Absturz zu
bewahren. Als Besonderheit will ich erwáhnen, dass ich
am 1. Juni 1936 auf dem Yztaklettur (Vestmannaeyjar)
ein unbebriitetes Lummenei in einer Papageitaucher- oder
Sturmtaucherhöhle fand, die ich mit meinen Helfern auf-
gegraben hatte. Die stark birnförmig zugespitzten Eier
sind nach Fárbung und Zeichnung ausserordentlich va-
riabel; so kennt man solche mit weisslichem, gelblichem,
bláulichem und griinlichem Grundton. Intensiv blaugriine
Stiicke sind ziemlich háufig. Die Zeichnung besteht aus
verschiedenen Flecken, Kritzeln und Gittern von dunkel-
griiner, brauner oder schwarzer Farbe, doch kommen auch
ganz ungefleckte Exemplare vor. 12 Eier messen und
wiegen 87,4—71,8 X 53,7—44,5 mm = 14,35—9,91 g;
Durchschnitt 80,8X49,6 mm = 12,29 g.
Die gewöhnliche Stimme ist, wie Hartert treffend
sagt, „ein plárrendes, vielfach abgetöntes rrrrrr“, bei dem
der mitklingende Vokal beliebig wechselt (arrr, örrr, errr
usw.), der Zusammenklang vieler in einer grossen Ko-
lonie, die in Island nach Zehntausenden, ja Hunderttau-
senden von Vögeln záhlen kann, ein geradezu ohrenbetáu-
bender Lárm. Allerlei Jaultöne vervollstándigen das nicht
eben einschmeichelnde akustische Gesamtbild, das aus ei-
niger Entfernung gehört, an Kindergeschrei oder Hunde-
geheul erinnert.
Die Nahrung besteht uberwiegend aus kleinen Seefi-
schen, in Island nach Tánings Untersuchungen beson-
ders aus der Brut grösserer Arten (Gadus callarius u. aeg-
lefinus), daneben nach B. Sæm. aus Ammodytes, Mallotus
u. kleinen Heringen, letztere bis zu einer Lánge von 28 cm.
Ausserdem werden (ob regelmássig?) auch Krustazeen,
Mollusken und Anneliden gefressen.
