An incredible stillness lies in the warm
wind of the Badlands. The smell of fresh
grass fills the senses, and the sunset
highlights the pink and brown bands of
colour on the strange moonscape. Dusk
brings with it the soft rustling of grass
and the eerie sounds of coyotes howl-
ing. “Tell me where you come from, and
I’ll tell you who you are,” is how an old
Indian saying goes. When I stood there
in the silence I felt the breeze whisper-
ing the history of this ancient land.
