Byatt are just two of the big names in the book world who will grace the fifth International Literary Festival in Reykjavík from 10–16 September. They will be joined by an impressive cast of interna- tional authors from 14 countries, including Paolo Coelho (Brazil), André Brink (South Africa), Slawomir Mrozek (Poland), Ivan Klíma (Czech Republic), Kerstin Ekman (Sweden), Ingo Schulze (German), Edward Bunker (US), Tahar Ben Jelloun (Morocco), and Magnus Mills (UK). A new feature of the festival is the promotion of Icelandic authors, 15 of whom will get the chance to show off their talents to representatives from major overseas publishing houses, such as Germany’s Steidl Verlag, the UK’s Faber & Faber and Harvill Press, and France’s Seuil. Lively discussion sessions, lectures and readings will take place throughout the week at the Nordic House and the Idnó Theatre in the city centre. Always a popular event, the Reykjavík Literary Festival is open to all and free of charge. Actually, it is so happening, that queues fre- quently form outside the popular bars and clubs, and people do not flinch when paying high entrance fees. A bright idea for partying visitors to the city is the new “City Walk pass”, a one week pass to the hottest nightlife in Reykjavík. The pass costs ISK 2.500 and offers its holders free admission or VIP access to the city’s coolest bars and clubs. Among the places featured are clubs Astro, Thomsen and Skuggabarinn, and bars such as Rex and Prikid. The pass also covers restaurants such as Lækjarbrekka, Pasta Basta and The Hard Rock Café, with special offers on food and drink.
