50 A T L A N T I C A i-site❍ There are still a few places on this earth where human beings have not left an imprint on the land. Thankfully, much of this unbroken landscape exists in Iceland, and for anyone adventurous enough to ven- ture beyond the boundaries of human existence, away from televisions, buildings, cement – Thingeyjarsýsla beckons. The region of Thingeyjarsýsla is located in northeast Iceland, so extreme that the Melrakkaslétta penin- sula nudges the Arctic Circle. During the winter months the entire area becomes snowbound, a playground for nature. Capturing nature’s dance is Dettifoss waterfall. Except for the scatter of a few farms, Europe’s most powerful waterfall rages in perfect isolation.
