Atlantica - 01.05.2002, Qupperneq 11
airmail A T L A N T I C A 9 It’s been nearly 40 years since the work of French artist Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was the subject of a major mono- graphic show in New York City. Wait no longer. From 18 June through 20 October, The Metropolitan Museum of Art will present ‘Gauguin in New York Collections: The Lure of the Exotic’, which contains approx- imately 100 pieces drawn from museums and private col- lections of New York City and State. The exhibition will comprise paintings, sculptures, ceram- ics, drawings and prints by Gauguin, conveying the excep- tional range of his career, both in terms of his technical facil- ity in a variety of media and the far-flung places and cul- tures that inspired his subjects. For more information, log on to www.metmuseum.org Mapping Scandinavia GAUGUIN FROM HERE AND THERE Ancient maps depict gods and monsters, celestial bodies, and earthly terrain, demonstrating not only man’s knowl- edge of natural boundaries, but also his view of his place in the world. In the exhibition, ‘Scandia: Important Early Maps of the Northern Regions and Maps and Charts of Norway from the Collection of William B. and Inger G. Ginsberg’, visitors can take a look at everything from man’s first impressions of Scandinavia, mapped in 1482, to the detailed workings of 19th century cartographers. The exhibition of these rare and early maps runs through 16 August at the Scandinavia House, located in New York City.
