For contemporary art, check out Färgfabriken in Liljeholmen, an old factory just outside the city. Further away is Tensta Konsthall, on Taxinge square in Tensta, inter- esting as it’s located in a very ethnically diverse suburb. For hip galleries, visit Magasin 3 in Frihamnen or Index on St. Paulsgatan. Kulturhuset on Sergels torg hosts a variety of art, design and photography exhibitions, as well as dance, music and theatre from around the world. There are two night scenes in Stockholm. One is slick and posh, the other arty and cool. The former, Stureplan, has a variety of trendy restaurants such as Sture Hof bar and restaurant. The venue offers three different restaurants under one roof: a café with outside seating, a restaurant and the O-Bar on the top floor. In the same area, look out for the newly renovated Riche at Birger Jarlsgatan, Café Opera in Kungsträdsgården and the Conran-designed Berns in Berzeli Park, which hosts hip club nights downstairs. The cultural scene at Södermalm, in the southern part of town, offers great clubs such as Södra Teatern or Mosebacke at Mosebacke square. Every other week there’s an oriental night at Kägelbanan at Mosebacke, where peo- ple of all ages meet and dance, dance, dance. Two really popular, classic bars are Kvarnen at Medborgarplatsen and Pelikan at Blekingegatan, where the crowd is a mixture of old and young. At Kvarnen, they have a recently redesigned interior, and at Pelikan, you’ll spot poets and artists from the Stockholm art scene. For restau- rant-cum-bars, try out Matkultur at Erstagatan, where you might even spot some of Sweden’s younger royals. El Mundo, which is right next to it, offers good food and a pop- ular watering hole in the same venue. Götgatsbacken in Södermalm is a street filled with designer shops. Get textiles from 10-Gruppen, stationery from Ordning & Reda and everything you might need for the home or office at Granit. DesignTorget features lots of cloth- ing by young designers, downstairs. For beautiful furnish- ings, check out David Design in DesignTorget. New restaurants open every week in Stockholm so there are more than enough to choose from. For a gourmet experi- ence, try Bon Lloc on Regeringsgatan. Selected as Sweden’s best restaurant of 2002, you can’t go wrong. Fredsgatan 12, of the same address, offers aesthetic design and sculptural dishes. Try their ‘sampler’ menu of five or seven courses accompanied by specially selected wines. 16 A T L A N T I C A airmail STOCKHOLM P H O TO P Á LL S TE FÁ N S S O N With more than 700 restaurants to choose from, endless shopping opportunities, some 38 hectares of parks and a wide variety of museums and galleries, the Swedish capital has it all. Stockholm is breathtakingly beautiful, with an enviable location on 14 islands at the edge of the Baltic Sea. Everywhere you look there are signs of Sweden’s glamorous past, from the grand old houses of Gamla Stan (The Old Town), to the sleek creations of a later generation of architectural maestros on Sergels square. Anna Margrét Björnsson checks out the latest places of interest in the city where she was born.
