DUOMO CATHEDRALS are rarely as overwhelming as the Duomo of Milan, located in the heart of the city. Even the most hardened world travellers are awestruck when they enter this magnificent house of God for the first time. The cathedral’s cornerstone was laid in 1386 and its construction eventually completed in 1813. The Milan Duomo is the third largest church in the world (St Peter’s Basilica in Rome is the largest, followed by St Matthew’s Church in Budapest). This 108-metre-high and 158-metre-long homage is visually stunning, both inside and out. Over 3,200 statues grace the cathedral’s exterior, and on the spire, a beautiful golden statue of the Madonna presides over the city. 024-030 ATL302 Italy-rm 22.4.2002 16:47 Page 29
