ˆGULLFOSS Iceland is a country of waterfalls. Thundering, mud-coloured, or pretty and crystal clear, each has its own special character. Many of the country’s most dazzling waterfalls are located in the south. The king of all waterfalls, Gullfoss, makes for a popular visit for both Icelanders and tourists alike. These majestic, dizzying falls are on the glacial river Hvítá and plunge some 32 metres into a deep, if ter- rifying canyon below. The so-called Golden Circle is a classic trip for visitors to the island, comprising Gullfoss, Thingvellir and the famous Geysir hot spring in Haukadalur. 032-036 ATL302 Wfalls 19.4.2002 17:02 Page 33
