North Brooklyn
Historical Centre, located at the corner of
Bedford, next to the Williamsburg Bridge.
The Centre was founded by the artist
Yuko Nii and is housed in the landmark
Kings County Savings Bank Building that
dates back to 1867. Aside from the histor-
ical significance of the building – a New
York City landmark and named to the
National Register of Historic Places – the
Centre serves the general public as well
as the ever expanding community of
north-Brooklyn artists. The NY Times
called the Centre, the “emerging nexus of
the Williamsburg art community”.
If you’re tired of galleries and cafés, muck
about the streets, but make sure to take
notice of the mess of spray paint graffi-
tied on to the various buildings. Some are
nonsense, but occasionally murals are
born from these spraying street artists.
Less formal than a gallery showing, but
every bit as creative.
While Williamsburg has transformed,
there are still buildings standing derelict,
which only adds to the interesting mix of
Williamsburg – a place where the sights
and sounds ring old and new. ❖
