Visitors to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum face a dilemma.
After stepping into the garden courtyard manicured with the
fresh smell of flowers and plants that magically bloom year
round, guests may decide to spend the entire day relaxing out-
side. If so, they’ll miss out on one of the nation’s finest collec-
tions of art, not to mention the regular concerts scheduled by the
Museum, including its Sunday concert series.
The only solution: plan to visit this oasis of art more than once.
Located in the Fenway section of Boston, the Isabella Stewart
Gardner Museum – opened on New Year’s Day, 1903 – features
three floors of galleries filled with paintings, sculptures, tapes-
tries, furniture and decorative arts spanning 30 centuries, includ-
ing works from the Wei dynasty and ancient Roman marbles to
artists like Titian, Botticelli and Raphael of the Italian
Renaissance. The Museum’s collection also includes rare books
by Dante, Venetian chairs and medieval processional crosses.
