WELCOME TO ESTONIA
Tallinn has a medieval walled city that rocks, a hip nightlife, loads
of cafes and restaurants and, if you’re interested, some crumbling
remnants of the Soviet era to check out. Tallinn is also home to
Carmen Kass, an international model who frequently graces the
cover of Vogue and other fashion magazines. Unfortunately, Miss
Kass is out of town at the moment, but I have just met Liis
Berendsen, an 18-year-old student who, if she wanted to give up
her track career, could certainly one day appear on the cover of a
glossy magazine, like most of the women in Tallinn.
Speaking with Berendsen outside her school, where she has just
finished an English exam, it’s easy to understand how Tallinn
leaped so far so fast. She’s eager, energetic and hopeful, even
though last year she lost five pints of vanilla ice cream because
she bet against Estonia in Eurovision.
“I didn’t believe Estonia would win because we are so small,” she
laughs. “We are so small, and we are not so well known.”
Not so fast Miss Berendsen. Now that the word is out, the tourists
will be flocking to Tallinn. Edward Weinman is a staff writer.

Icelandair flies daily to Stockholm and Copenhagen, where
you can catch between two to four connecting flights a day to
Tallinn on SAS, or co-operating flights aboard Estonian Air.
