Be Well Covered One of Iceland Telecom’s main strengths lies in its distribution network, which covers 98 percent of the country. Iceland Telecom’s NMT network covers most of the country and even out to sea, and is accessible where the GSM network is not. It is also worth mentioning that the GPRS system (sometimes referred to as Generation 2.5 GSM system) also reaches 98 percent of Iceland’s population. That means that the GPRS network is effec- tive in more places than GPRS networks from other operators in the country which have less distribution. Almost 90 percent of Iceland’s population, aged 16-75, either uses or has access to mobile phones. This is among the highest pro- portion in the world. About 70 percent of all GSM phonecards in use are registered with Iceland Telecom. At the end of 2001, 145,000 GSM numbers and 27,000 NMT numbers were in use. On numerous occasions, NMT phones have proven to be an effective security/emergency device for those who travel outside of the country’s main roads, e.g. in the Highlands. Iceland Telecom pro- vides access to two satellite systems, Inmarsat and Iridum. The toll-free number for Iceland Telecom’s service centre is 800- 7000.
