Retracing History
When visiting the spectacular Skógafoss waterfall in south
Iceland, make sure you stop at the Folk Museum at Skógar.
This beautiful museum has been dedicated to preserving the
cultural heritage of the counties of Rangárvellir and West-
Skaftafell, and is one of the most comprehensive collections
of antiquities in Iceland.
The museum's collection of objects spans from the Viking age
until the last century, although its main focus is on the 18th
and 19th centuries. Through the objects, one can observe the
life and work of farmers and fishermen in these centuries;
their clothes, tools, handicraft, jewellery, and even their
homes.
At Skógar there are several turf farmhouses which have been
reconstructed and the picturesque church was built from
scratch in the old style and consecrated in 1998. Visit the
Fisheries Hall, which displays fishing gear, shipbuilding
equipment and the museum's prize possession, the Pétursey
fishing boat. Explore the intriguing natural history collection,
the Icelandic handicrafts exhibition, and the Agriculture Hall,
which exhibits old tools and equipment. Also investigate the
exhibition on the age of communication in Iceland. It includes
everything from the first automobiles and telephones to the
latest in computer technology.
