84 A T L A N T I C A i-site REYKJAVÍK❍ Árbæjarsafn Folk Museum is the largest open-air museum in Iceland. It is a nostalgic reminder of the traditional Iceland that has been mostly left in the shadow of the modern day. The museum is made up of around 30 buildings which were mostly transported from downtown Reykjavík. They date from the period 1820-1920. Exhibitions and workshops are held in the reconstructed houses during the summer period. A programme of events is sched- uled for the summer and craftspeople will demonstrate traditional Icelandic craftsmanship almost every day. This summer, a concert will be held every Saturday, where young and upcoming musicians will have the opportunity to tread their first foot- steps into the music world. On Saturdays, there will also be a special programme for children. Traditional Icelandic games will be organised and the children will get the chance to take part in all sorts of fun activities. The museum is open all working days, except Mondays, from 9-5. During the weekends, it will be open from 10-6. Kystuhylur, Árbær, 110 ReykjavÌk, tel: (+354) 577-1111, www.arbaejarsafn.is Nostalgic Neighbourhood THE REYKJAVÍK MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Museum of Photography will be show- ing Icelandic newspaper photographs from 1965 to 1975 in a new light this summer. The nearly two hundred photographs will be removed from their original context as an accompaniment to news stories and made to stand on their own. The photographs will get the opportunity to live a life independent of the news events they reflect. The exhibi- tion will be open from 12-18 on weekdays and from 13-17 during the weekend. There is no entrance fee. The library offers a variety of newspapers and magazines in eight languages. There you will also find books on Iceland in many languages, a chil- dren's play area, a CD music collection and access to the Internet. After checking the bulletin board for what's on and where, you can relax in the coffee shop on the first floor before heading off to your next destination.
