The Reykjavík-based record company Thule Musik will be
providing the Iceland Airwaves festival engine with approxi-
mately one third of its fuel this October. Bands which have
been nudging themselves on to the music scene, such as
Trabant, Apparat Organ Quartet and The Funerals, will be
pulling some tunes from up their sleeves, as well as less-
known bands such as Sofandi, Scream, The Worm is Green,
Tommy White, Frank Murder and many more. Thule Musik
opened an office in the United States recently and has sealed
eight contracts with distribution companies around America.
The Funerals, headed by musicians associated with bands
such as Trabant, Singapore Sling, Kanada, Apparat Organ
Quartet and Quarashi, have been causing quite a stir with
their record Pathetic Me, which has even been coined the
record of the year by some music magazines.
On the other side of the ocean, Trabant has been catching the
attention of Brits and Europeans, who seem to dig their
drunken circus music. Apparat Organ Quartet will most
probably also be causing a big hullabaloo in October with the
release of their new record a week before the Airwaves festi-
val.
After the festival, as long as the funding goes through, all
three bands, Trabant, The Funerals and Apparat, will be unit-
ing forces to rock America – a trio not to be reckoned with.
After months and months of planning that dream trip to
Iceland, you’ve finally arrived and are wondering: Now what
do we do? To clear away the fog and find your bearings,
head downtown to Central Reykjavík Travel Service.
At the Travel Service, visitors to Iceland can get information
and book just about any type of excursion. Want to rent a
car? No problem. How about go snowmobiling up a glacier,
find a guest house in one of Iceland’s dinky towns, rent a
bike, camping gear, even make long distance phone calls?
Located smack dab in the heart of downtown, the newly
opened centre will ensure that not a minute of your trip goes
wasted wondering about what to do.
“We were thinking of closing during the winter, but it’s been
so busy we’ve decided to stay open all year long,” says
Ásberg Jónsson, one of the centre’s managers.
And for those of you who must stay connected to your
favourite web sites or send e-mails to your friends telling
them what a wonderful time you’re having up here in
Iceland, there’s also an Internet café. EW
