THE NOGUCHI MUSEUM IN NEW YORK.
It’s open once again. Following a major
renovation to its facility and garden, the
Noguchi Museum will reopen on 12 June
with “Isamu Noguchi: Sculptural Design”,
an exhibition focusing on the “virtuoso
design work of one of the 20th century’s
pre-eminent sculptors and designers.”
With more than 100 items, the exhibition is
devoted to the full range of Isamu
Noguchi’s work as a sculptor, architect,
and designer of stage sets, playgrounds,
furniture and lighting.
Having been closed since October 2001,
the museum, created by Isamu Noguchi in
a former photoengraving plant on Long
Island, New York, comprises ten indoor
galleries and the celebrated outdoor sculp-
ture garden.

The 1950’s are back in style. Look no
further than NYC’s hottest club, The
Coral Room, to prove it. Situated in
West Chelsea, this amazing venue
says bye-bye to minimalism and hello
to kitsch, being best described as a
punk-rock version of a tacky Florida
seaside resort. The former warehouse
is awash with a palette of seashore
colours, has driftwood lamps and
faux-coral walls. The jewel in the
crown is a gargantuan aquarium, an illuminated 10,000-gallon tank that occu-
pies much of the wall behind the massive bar. It’s inhabited by 15 species of
tropical fish, and mermaids. Yes, you read right: aquatic, bikini-clad maidens
that swim sensually through the tank and blow kisses at people. Hosting
everything from rock’n’roll parties, including a recent gig by Iceland’s
Singapore Sling, to film release parties and gay nights complete with mer-
men, the clientele consist of über-cool arty types clad in vintage couture. Grab
a Coral Cocktail, a heady mix based on Raspberry Stolichnaya, and party on,
Atlantis-style. AMB
