What We’re Reading
New York has finally built a shrine to Jazz, in the same spot the
great American art form was first performed in the City in 1918.
The Frederick P. Rose Hall, the world’s first centre constructed
specifically for jazz performance and education, opens 18
October, 2004. Built under the guidance of Wynton Marsalis, the
centre will host three weeks of opening festivities beginning on
the 18th. Among the many performers, Bill Cosby, Dianne
Reeves, Savion Glover and Stevie Wonder. Then there are the
house bands, Wynton’s Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and
Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, who are, simply put,
the best of the best, worthy, to say the least, of the building. BC
