Iceland review - 2007, Side 35
ICELAND REVIEW 41 The First Snow of Winter The blanket of white is welcomed here in Iceland – it lights up the short winter days. The best place to be is near Lake Mývatn, in the north. There, at least, the snow comes straight down, and is not blown horizontally like in the capital. Over the last few winters there has been so little snow that it’s been difficult to practice winter sports full-on. Is it global warming, or just normal shifts in nature? Some years we’ll get lots of snow, other years next to none. With any luck it will be plentiful this winter, but one thing is for sure: there is always far more snow in the north of Iceland than in the south. So if you like your Icelandic landscapes to be white and frozen, Lake Mývatn is an excellent bet. PS Kálfaströnd, Lake Mývatn, north Iceland.
