The only look that most visitors to Iceland get of the quaint fishing community of Hafnar­
fjördur is a flash outside the FlyBus window on their way to Reykjavík. With the opening
in July 2007 of the renovated Hotel Hafnarfjördur, travelers now have an alternative to
accommodation in the capital that brings the best of both worlds together.

otel Hafnarfjördur’s convenient location puts it in a unique position to serve
its guests in a unique way. Just a 15­minute drive from the center of Reykjavík,
visitors have direct access to all of the highlights of city life, in a tranquil
community on the fjord that allows an intimate look at an important aspect
of Icelandic life.
Apartments make up the majority of accommodations at the hotel, with studios for up
to four guests and family­size apartments at affordable prices for those traveling with
children, but six smaller rooms are also available for individuals or couples. The
apartments boast large windows that fill the spaces with natural light while providing
panoramic views of the surrounding community. With small kitchenettes and high­quality
furnishings, guests can be sure to feel at home, and enjoy any degree of freedom they
like to explore on their own.
The historical center of Hafnarfjördur, with its small, brightly colored houses and tree­
lined neighborhoods, is just down the street, as is the waterfront and harbor area, which
conjure up images of what Reykjavík must have been like in the days before massive
migration to the capital city. The hotel is well aware of its unique location, providing
guests with a range of Hafnarfjördur­specific activities such as ferry boat tours and
deep­sea­fishing.
With expansion and renovations planned for completion in spring 2008, Hotel
Hafnarfjördur will be able to offer a full range of services to its guests, including a top­
floor restaurant, lobby bar, solarium and additional rooms. As it stands, it has much to
offer visitors to Iceland who wish to experience a small community that manifests Ice­
land’s fishing history while at the same time offering easy access to the city itself,
without the hassle of the capital city.
Adding to Hotel Hafnarfjördur’s charm is the impressive collection of paintings by Nói,
the renowned local master often referred to as the “Icelandic Jackson Pollock”. With its
location, services, and design, Hotel Hafnarfjördur offers a distinctly Icelandic experience
that, unfortunately, many visitors to Iceland do not get to experience, but should.
