ICELAND REVIEW 95
At the top of Reykjavík’s busiest shopping and dining street sits the 4th Floor
Hotel, so named because, you guessed it, it originally occupied but one floor of
the building it is currently taking over. Its standards of sleek contemporary design
and the range of choices in rooms have made it a favorite of travelers of all sorts,
from younger budget travelers to families with children.
T
he most basic single rooms have shared bathrooms, with no more than two
rooms sharing the same stateoftheart facilities. Luxury rooms with private bath
rooms offer more space and expansive windows, with two featuring private
balco nies with majestic views of Mt. Esja rising in the distance. There is also a
family suite that can accommodate up to six people with two separate bathrooms, and
nine luxury and studio apartments in a property across the street for longer stays and
guests who desire a bit more privacy.
No matter the room type, the décor throughout the hotel reflects sleek contemporary
design, enhanced with international pieces collected personally by the management.
Mies van der Rohe’s legendary Barcelona couches and chairs lend polished modern
style to the downstairs lounge, as well as several suites, while unique Asian paintings
add character to even the smallest of rooms. A few bathrooms feature hewn stone sinks
with Chinese marble uniquely imported for the space.
As the newest hotel in Reykjavík, the 4th Floor has big plans for expansion. A café/
restaurant on two floors opening in December will expand on the firstfloor bar and break
fast area. By the summer of 2008, a redesigned exterior and inhouse car rental service
will complete the look and expand the tourist services already provided to guests via
partnerships with the city’s leading tour agencies.
The 4th Floor Hotel is so much more than the name suggests, and is unique in its refus
al to narrowly define itself in any one category. It truly offers something for everyone,
which very few hotels can claim, giving it the ability to welcome all types of guests
while maintaining the high standards of design and service that have already proven
quite successful.
