Fishy FActs
Icelanders eat 88 kg (194 lbs) of fish per person per year, a
world record, according to a new survey by Íslandsbanki. The
world average is 18.5 kg (41 lbs) a year. Portugal comes sec-
ond with 61 kg (134 lbs), followed by Japan with 57 kg (127
lbs), South Korea with 56 kg (123 lbs) and Norway with 51
kg (112 lbs) per person per year. As a fishing nation, Iceland
is number 17, while China, Peru and Indonesia top the list.
Excluding Russia, Iceland is Europe’s second biggest fishing
nation; only Norway catches more seafood. PS
Art, music, football, newborns, new Icelanders,
fish lovers and a beloved airport.
Aron & EmilíA
Just as in 2011, the names Aron and Emilía
reign supreme when it comes to names for
Icelandic boys and girls born in 2012. By
far the most popular second name for boys
was Þór, followed by Logi and Ingi. As for
the girls, Ósk was the most popular second
name, alongside María. This was also the
case in 2011. Lilja was the third most popu-
lar second name for newborn girls. ÁA
