The Vestmannaeyjar (‘Westman Islands’) archipelago consists of 15
islands, famous for their rich birdlife and volcanic activity. Home to
4,200 people, Heimaey is the only inhabited island. The town has a
number of restaurants and cafés, galleries, hotels, guesthouses, a camp-
site, swimming pool and the most unusual 18-hole golf course.
bUStling cUltUre
In 1973 the Eldfell volcanic eruption buried 400 houses in lava and ash
and threatened to bring life on Heimaey to an end, but most inhabitants
eventually returned to rebuild their community. The effects of the eruption
are still present. Boasting the second-largest fishing station in the country,
fisheries remain the main industry on Heimaey. Locals pride themselves on
their hospitality and welcome visitors year-round. There are plenty of tours

The Eldheimar – Pompeii of the North visitor center, which opened in
spring 2014, reveals houses that were buried in ash in the 1973 Eldfell
volcanic eruption. Some remain as they were when their families ran for

a multimedia exhibition from a scientific, and also a deeply personal,

The only aquarium in Iceland, Sæheimar, is located on Heimaey. Not
only displaying samples of Iceland’s marine fauna, the aquarium is also
an ‘unofficial rescue center’ for puffins and other birds. Surprised visi-
tors are often delighted when they get to meet pufflings being nurtured

Sagnheimar, the local folk museum, tells stories such as of the is-
landers battling the forces of nature and of the pirates who invaded
the islands in the 1627 and abducted over half of the inhabitants.

Visitors can choose from a number of different accommodation op-
tions, including Hotel Eyjar in the heart of town. Renovated in 2012-
