WinTer Games
An annual feature on the Akureyri event calendar are the Iceland
Winter Games, held March 6-14 this year. The town comes alive
with an array of live concerts and exciting cultural events, in addi-
tion to all the winter activities on offer. Visitors join locals on the
slopes, the cross-country tracks and in the ice rink, and take ad-
vantage of the amazing opportunity to try heli-skiing—a guaran-
teed adrenaline-boost. Driving a ski-doo in powder snow is thrill-
ing too, as is going on a dog-sledding adventure, or horseback
riding in a serene winter landscape. Winter sports are, of course,
the name of the game and the festival’s main events, the snow-
board and freeskiing competition with renowned international

With up to 14 scheduled flights per day between Reykjavík and
Akureyri, the ‘Capital of the Shining North’ is only 45 minutes
away, though the approximately four-hour drive is also enjoyable.
