Boasting a variety of well-equipped ski resorts all within a stone’s
throw, North Iceland has a lot to offer winter sports enthusiasts;
both seasoned athletes and beginners preparing for their first
downhill runs. And now, rather than choose just one of these great
resorts, you can create your own ideal ski holiday with Ski Iceland.
Five DiFFerenT resorTs
Ski Iceland is a five-day pass that gives the holder access to five dif-
ferent ski areas in North Iceland. You can spend one day skiing at
each resort, or three days at one and two at another. How you mix
and match is completely up to you. Equipment return is easy too—
just pick up your gear at the start of your trip and drop it off wher-
ever you end. What better way is there to enjoy some great winter
activities and to get acquainted with a few of Iceland’s northernmost
villages at the same time?
While all of the resorts feature floodlit courses and diverse tracks
for all skill levels, each has something unique to recommend it. Just
three hours away from the capital, the ski area at Sauðárkrókur is
nestled alongside the towering Tindastóll mountain. Its lift reaches
the pinnacle at 690 meters (2,260 feet) above sea level, and it has a
special snowboarding area too.
Quick Drive, more skiinG
You’ll find the next four ski areas all within an hour’s drive. First,
there’s the trendy, up-and-coming village of Siglufjörður. Its resort
features three lifts and a varied range of slopes, and has consis-
tently good snowfall and a high snow pack.
Ólafsfjörður is known for its cross-country skiing and also has
excellent slalom tracks. Dalvík is popular with locals, and has a
strong ski racing tradition (in fact, the town sent a skier to the
2010 Winter Olympics). And family-friendly Hlíðarfjall has a spe-
cial ‘Magic Carpet’ children’s lift, as well as a ski school with les-
sons for adults, children and adaptive skiers.
arcTic WinTer Bliss
Visit in high winter and experience Iceland’s sparse winter sun,
skiing on lit slopes at midday under starry skies. Visit in March and
enjoy the Iceland Winter Games, a snow sport festival in Akureyri.
Come during the Easter break, at the height of Iceland’s ski sea-
son, and meet the locals on the slopes. Or enjoy the last of the
snow in April, when the sun doesn’t set until after 8:30 pm.
