NEWS SUMMARY
Rev. Robert Jack, a Scot and noted
athlete turned Icelandic clergyman and
for a period some years ago pastor of
the Icelandic Lutheran congregation
at Arborg, Man., with his wife Vigdis,
a native of Iceland, paid a brief visit
to Mantoba in October. On a visit with
Mr. Jack’s mother in Scotland, they
flew to Canada to attend the funeral
of Mr. Jack’s aunt in Vancouver. En-
route they stopped off briefly in Win-
nipeg and Arborg to renew acquaint-
ances. Mr. Jack initially, in his early
years, went to Iceland to teach soccer
and train Icelanders in this essentially
English game. He stayed to marry an
Icelandic girl and enter the ministry.
Needless to say, he is fluent in Iceland-
ic.

Miss Unnur A. Kristjansson of Win-
nipeg topped her class when she
received a bachelor of nursing degree
in October from McGill University,
Montreal. She was awarded the prize
of the university’s school for graduate
nurses alumnae. Miss Kristjansson,
daughter of Mrs. Fridrik Kristjansson,
122% Garfield St. Winnipeg, is a gra-
duate of Winnipeg General Hospital
school of nursing and has a nursing
education diploma from the University
of Manitoba. Miss Kristjansson this fall
took up duties as nursing instructor
at Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg.

David Sigurgeirson received his
bachelor of arts degree after writing
examinations at the University of Bri-
tish Columbia this fall. He has taken
over duties as a social worker at Daw-
son Creek and Fort St. John in nor-
thern British Columbia where he will
remain for a year or more before under-
taking further studies. Mr. Sigurgeir-
son, who is 21, is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. S. J. Sigurgeirson, formerly of
Hecla, Man. and now resident at Stev-
eston, B. C.

George Cooney in October was elect-
ed to the council of Old Kildonan, a
suburb of Winnipeg. Mr. Cooney, em-
ployed as a government inspector of
packing house operations, is the son
of Mrs. Johanna Cooney, who is of
Icelandic origin, and the late Henry
Cooney.

Rev. Jon Bjarman, Lutheran pastor
at Lundar, Man., this fall accepted a
call from the congregation at Laufasi,
Eyjarfjord, Iceland. Mr. Bjarman with
his wife Hanna and young son Pall left
in October for Iceland to take over hi
new post. Mr. Bjarman, who had been
pastor at Lundar for three years,, was
born, raised and educated in Iceland
and came to Canada shortly after his
ordination less than four years ago.

R. O. Jonasson of Winnipeg in Sept-
ember was appointed sales manager for
the Winnipeg branch of the Dominion
Bridge Company Limited, succeeding
K. R. Ebbern who was transferred to
Montreal, Que. where he became sales
manager of the company’s structural
division. Mr. Jonasson had been struc-
