I will maintain my opinion regardless of
the opposition, until I am proven wrong,
or I gain a new or better understanding of
the question. As the English proverb says,
“A wise man is apt to change his mind if he
grows wiser.”
My opinions are not for sale. I have gen-
erally been impractical, taken the side of
the common people rather than the high
and mighty. I have made the acquaintance
of many a learned man, and those who
were courteous, open and direct in their
bearing have always proved to be the best
men. I have usually managed on my own
financially, although I scarcely know how,
since my family and I have for many years
been plagued by ill-health and ill-fortune
which I could do little to avert. I took part
in all the carpenters’ strikes which took
place in Winnipeg while I lived there, even
though in some cases I had had little or no
previous work to the calling of a strike,
which made things rather difficult for a
family man.
In Winnipeg 1 worked for many years as
a carpenter and finally building houses on
contract which usually meant we had to
provide all the materials ourselves and were
only paid when the house was completed.
1 moved out west some eight years ago
and settled on poor and difficult land, the
only land available in the area. I later
bought another piece of land nearby which
is also not the best.
I read everything I can get my hands on
regarding agriculture. 1 am a life member
of the Icelandic Agricultural Society and
the Northern Growers’ Society. I have had
a lot to do with improving cattle through
selective breeding and have now good
shorthorns as well as excellent fowl: chick-
ens (white Wyandottes), white ducks and
Bronze turkeys (the toms can reach 40
pounds), and my goat-raising has turned
