GÖFUG HUGSJÓN
Ef það er nokkur mælikvarði á menningu þjóða hvernig
þær búa að þeim, sem minnimáttar eru þjóðfélaginu, þá ætla ég
að Islendingar í Vesturheimi hafi gefið meðborgurum sínum gott
fordæmi, að minsta kosti á því sviði að reyna að hlynna að þeim,
sem aldurhnignir eru. Islenzku kirkjurnar skipuðu frá fyrstu tíð
djáknanefndir, sem höfðu það
starf aðallega með höndum.
Brátt kom í ljós að þörf var á
hæli fyrir gamalmenni. Kvenfé-
lag Fyrsta lúterska safnaðar í
Winnipeg átti frumkvæði að því
að það yrði stofnað og lagði
fram fyrsta tillagið í stofnsjóð-
inn. 1 apríl hefti Sameiningar-
innar 1907 birtist í fyrsta sinn
opinber áskorun til almennings
að leggja fram fé þessu málefni
til styrktar, undirskrifuð af Láru
Bjarnason, Hansínu Olson og
Perínu Thorlaksson. Þær segja
meðal annars:
“Það dylst varla neinum, að
það er rrtjög þungt böl að vera

einmana og hjálparlaust gamal-
menni, sem hvergi hefir höfði
sínu að halla, eftir baráttu lið-
inna æfiára. Ef annað eins hæli
og það, er fyrir kvennfélagi voru
vakir, væri til vor á meðal, þá
mætti til stórra muna bæta úr
böli aldurhniginna, bræðra og
systra, sem þannig er ástatt fyr-
ir, með því að veita þeim heimili
hjá sínu eigin fólki, það sem eftir
er æfinnar.”
Þessi hugmynd fann hljóm-
grunn í hjörtum íslenzks almenn-
ings og heimilið Betel var stofn-
að. Og þessi göfuga hugsjón náði
útbreiðslu eins og Skýrt er frá
í erindi því, sem hér fer á eftir.

fluttu á afmælishátíð Elliheimilis Betel, í
Fyrstu lútersku kirkju — 1. marz 1949

Það er æfinlega ánægjulegt að koma saman til að minnast
afmælis merkra manna og stofnana. Það er sérstaklega ánægjulegt
að minnast afmælis stofnunar eins og Elliheimilsins Betel á Gimli.
Sá stofnun nýtur tvímælalaust meiri vinsælda yfirleitt en nokkur
önnur stofnun eða fyrirtæki á meðal okkar Vestur-Islendinga.
Það er augljóst að mikil blessun
kunnur sem fræðimaður, rithöf-
undur, og brennheitur áhugmað-
ur um kristindóm og önnur
þjóðþrifamál í landinu. Saga
Elliheimilsins Grund er að miklu
leyti hans saga, saga um áhuga
hans, framsýni, trú og mannkær-
leika. Tildrögin að stofnun þessa
heimilis eru í stuttu máli á þessa
leið: Stjórn umdæmisstúku Góð-
tmeplara í Reykjavík tók upp þá
nýbreytni í árslok 1913 að safna
gjöfum til að geta gefið fátækum
börnum og gamalmennum mið-
degisverð um tveggja eða þriggja
mánaða skeið á vetrum. Þessu
var haldið áfram um tíu ára
skeið. Kom þá í ljós að nauðsyn
bar til að stofna einhverskonar
hæli eða heimili fyrir þá. En hér
var við ramman reip að draga
þar sem bæði var fjárþröng, og
engin reynzla fyrir hendi um
stofnun eða rekstur heimilis af
því tagi. Séra Sigurbjörn ferðað-
ist um þessar mundir til Norður-
landa, og kynti sér elliheimili
þar, en ekki leist honum þau
allskostar fýsileg til fyrirmynd-
ar. En nú læt ég séra Sigurbjörn
sjálfan segja frá: “Níu árum síð-
ar kynntist ég öðru elliheimili.
Bjó ég í næsta húsi við það meira
en mánaðartíma og talaði dag-
lega við gamla fólkið, og heyrði
engar umkvartanir. í fyrsta
skifti sem ég kom þar sat hópur
vistmanna á palli sunnan undir
húsinu. Þegar ég spurði: Hvað
hefir fylgt þeirri stofnun frá
uPphafi, enda má ganga að því
sem sjálfsögðum hlut að hver sú
stofnun sem er hafin og starf-
r®kt í þeim anda sem ávalt hefir
ríkt á Betel, og samkvæmt þeirri
göfugu hugsjón sem ávalt hefir
vakað fyrir forráðamönnum
heimilsins, hlýtur blessun Guðs
°g atbeina góðra manna viðsveg-
ar- Starfsemi Betel hefir verið
heilladrjúg, ekki aðeins fyrir
hina mörgu vistmenn, sem hafa
n°tið, og njóta nú skjóls og
öryggis þar, hinztu æfiárin, held-
Ur hafa aðrar stofnanir risið upp
með sama anda og stefnu eins
°g Betel, í Vancouver, B.C. í
Blaine, Washington, og á Moun-
tain, N.D. Okkur er öllum kunn-
ugt um þessar stofnanir hér vest-
anhafs. Allar hafa þær Betel að
íyrirmynd, og tvær þeirra hafa
hlotið nokkurn fjárhagslegan
styrk úr sjóði þess heimlis. En
°kkur er það ef til vill ekki eins

heldur einnig austur fyrir
Atlandshaf, alla leið til Reykja-
Vlkur á Islandi.
Á dvalarári mínu þar í landi
kyntist ég mörgum ágætum
^aönnum, og merkum stofnun-
um. Þeirra á meðal var séra
^igurbjörn Á. Gíslason, og Elli-
heimilið Grund í Reykjavík.
^éra Sigurbjörn er löngu þjóð-
getið þið sagt mér 1 fréttum, og
hvernig líður ykkur nú hérna?”
Þá var mér svarað: “Það hefir
nú oft blásið kalt um okkur um
dagana, en nú erum við komin
í þessa blessuðu Paradís.” Þetta
heimili var Betel á Gimli í Can-
ada, elliheimilið íslenzka sem
Kirkjufélagið lúterska stofnaði
1915 og starfrækir enn í dag.
Forstöðukonurnar, Miss Júlíus,
og Mrs. Ásdís Hinriksson sáu um
morgunbænir og borðbænir dag-
lega, og alt starfsfólkið virtist
mér svo samtaka um kristlega
nærgætni við gamla fólkið sem
þá var um fjötutíu, en er nú um
sextíu, að ég kunni hvergi jafn-
vel við mig vestanhafs eins og á
Betel. Ég vildi að Guð gæfi að ég
gæti hjálpað til að stofna svipað
elliheimili á Islandi, hugsaði ég,
er ég kvaddi Betel.”
Guð gaf það. Draumurinn
rœttist. Elliheimilið Grund var
vígt 29. október 1922. Mér veitt-
ist sú ánægja að heimsækja
heimikið, ávarpa vistmenn, og
koma inní herbergi nokkurra
þeirra í fyrravetur. Heimilið er
stórhýsi á prýðilegum stað í
bænum, og aðbúnaður allur, og
tæki eins og bezt verður á kosið.
Vistmenn munu nú vera um 250,
en meira en helmingur þeirra
rúmfastir sjúklingar. Töluvert
mun á vanta að ellilífeyrir þessa
fólks hrökkvi til að greiða dval-
arkostnaðinn, og verður uppbót
því að koma annað hvort frá
bæjarfélaginu eða aðstandend-
um vistmanna. Heimilið er rekið
í sama anda og Betel, þ.e.a.s. sem
kristileg stofnun. Séra Sigur-
björn ér prestur heimilisins, en
sonur hans Gísli er forstjóri þess.
Er hann mesti ágætismaður eins
og faðir hans. Af þessu er ljóst
að áhrifin frá Betel hafa orðið
til blessunar, einnig fyrir Island.

LEIÐRÉTTING
Það vildi svo ílla til að nokkrar
línur rugluðust í greininni um
samkomu Laugardagsskólans
þegar hún var sett í formana.
Málsgreinamar eru svona:
Nokkrir nýjir nemendur höfðu
bætzt við hópinn og var það
undrunarefni hve vel þeim tókst
að skila sínum hlutverkum. öll
töluðu bömin skýrt og greinilega
svo hvert einasta orð heyrðist og
skildist í leikjum, framsögn og
söngvum. Stundum hefir því
verið haldið fram að börnin
lærðu eins og páfagaukar og
skildu ekki það sem þau væru að
fara með. Slíkt er ekki rétt. Aug-
ljóst var af öllum áherslum, til-
burðum og framkomu barnanna,
að þau skildu hvert orð sem þau
fóru með.
En hitt er ekki öllum ljóst að
kennararnir verja mikilli um-
hugsun og miklum tíma fram
yfir hinar venjulegu kenslu-
stundir til þess að útbúa sam-
komu sem þessa. En þeir sjá
ekki eftir því. Með þessu móti
læra börnin nokkuð í málinu á
skemtilegan hátt. Þau æfast í því
að koma fram opinberlega og
það getur orðið þeim að liði
seinna meir og þar að auk hafa
þau af þessu hina mestu skemt-
un, eins og auðséð var, því gleð-
in skein á hverju andliti.

Sermon for publication in the
Berkeley Gazette on Easter
Monday as the sermon of the
week. The reprint enclosed is
being sent you by the courtesy
of Mr. Ellis Stoneson of San
Francisco.

The sentiment at our last Pic-
nic was against having a Tom-
bola. The outcome of the delib-
erations of the Committee of the
Whole was that we have a Raf-
fle and an Auction for the real
money-raising phase of our So-
cial Evening on behalf of the
Old Folks Home at Blaine. We
have changed the date to June
18th, and the place will be Mt.
Davidson Masonic Hall, corner
of Ocean and Ashton, San Fran-
cisco. (Iceland’s National Holi-
day is June 17th, which we shall
commemorate on the 18th).
Come one, come all.

Now let us tell you about the
two main features on the Pro-
gram: The Raffle Prize is to be
a latest model Frigidaire (9 cu.
ft.). This is what the Icelander
calls “The Raisin!” The second
main feature will be Music and
Vaudeville by Home Grown Ar-
tists. Of course, the Auction
headed by Doc Oddstad will net
us lots of fun and more income
for the Home. As for the Re-
freshments which Our Ladies
will provide, they will be the
best ever. It is too early to tell
you about the orchestra. We
trust this is enough to whet your
appetites. A special bulletin will
be mailed to you next month.

Believe it or not, but on April
lst your scribe witnessed his
first Night Baseball Game. It
was a slow, one-sided game. If
any of you are baseball fans,
please let me know so that I can
join you with my Peanut Bag!

Did you notice that Vancou-
ver is coming out with a month-
ly news-letter? We have yet to
see a copy. But here’s best of
luck to the Editor and his staff.
It’s got to be good!

On April 8th we two eloped
because it was Lina’s Birthday
on the lOth. What do you think
we did? There was a Y.P. Con-
ference scheduled for that week-
end on the Monterey Peninsula.
In order that we might bask in
the sunlight of Youth and Na-
ture, we set out on the highway
on Friday visiting enroute the
Pendletons and Sigurdsons at
Santa Cruz and Mrs. P. H. Phil-
lips (Helga) at Monterey. We
stayed over Sunday at Asilomar
by the Sea and returned to
Berkeley Monday evening for a
Surprise Birthday Party at our
son’s home where all the child-
ren and the grandchildren were

and hers of course! But Esther
called us long distance and pull-
ed so hard on the wires , (on our
heart strings, to be exact!) to
get us to come and spend a
month with her family before
the heat of the Summer at St.
Louis sets in. To be sure, other
strings too come in for consider-
ation, but Mother has just about
decided that come what may,
she is going soon!

On April 9th, together with
the rolling in of the S.F. Fog, a
host of friends rolled in at the
Edwards’ home to surprise Joan
and Bill—Geston and Hermann
respectively as yet! Yes, the
wedding date has been set for
June 5th. And the future home
will be in Berkeley. One up for
the East Bay!

On April 18th there was a
gathering of fog-bound Ice-
landers at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. George Brown to honor
Mrs. John F. Sigurdson of Van-
couver, B.C. We could not at-
tend (sorry) but a good time was
reported by all. This turned out
to be combination House Warm-
ing Party and a Moving Party
as well. Believe it or not, the
Browns have been bought out
by the city—this time to make
way for an overhead bridge (or
somehing)—and are having to
move again! Why not try the
East Bay this time?

Visitors for the month? Yes—
but you havén’t reported any-
one as yet!
Dr. E. T. Feldsted of Vancouver
B.C. (Eddie, formerly of Winni-
peg an dour nephew) is visting
in our midst for about six months
specializing at the UC Hospital
in S.F. He is a Radiologist. Prev-
ious to coming here he was in
New York for six months and
from here he goes to England
for a year before returning to
Vancouver. He is travelling and
studying on a scholarship grant-
ed by the British Columbia De-
partment of Health. Make your-
self at home, Eddie!
Mrs. John F. Sigurdson (In-
grid) of Vancouver, B.C., honor-
ed us with a visit one afternoon
last week together with friends
—Mrs. Paterson of Vancouver
and Mrs. Wirth of San Francisco.
Thus we located another resi-
dent Icelander in our Com-
munity. Mrs. Wirth is an Egil-
son from Brandon and Winnipeg
Her brother, Rev. Einar Egilson
is Pastor of the United Church
in Selkirk, Manitoba.

Yes, the May Picnic is on
again, but the June Picnic is off
because of our Benefit Social.

Iceland’s National Holiday Cele-
bration in San Francisco.

Holidays!
September 25th—Picnic at Ber-
keley—1152 Laurel Street.

We want to take this oppor-
tuniy to thank all of you who
remembered us at Easter Time
with letters, cards and other-
wise.
Welcome on Sunday, March
27th. We propose to resolve our-
selves into a Committee 'íif the
Whole to discuss ways and
means of our Benefit Program.
A suggestion has been made that
togther with a Musical Program
we have a Tombola. Now, if any-
body knows how to run a Tom-
bola, please come and tell us all
about it. Norway Hall in Pied-
mont (one block off MacArthur
Blvd.) has been secured for this
Big Event and reserved for Sat-
urday evening, May 21st. Mark
this date in your book.

Shall we make it our own Easter
Service Day? Watch our next
letter for the announcement of
time and place.

Since May is the month set for
our Benefit Rrogram, we shall
omit the Picnic and Birthday
Party for that month. (Am very
sorry because my Birthday
comes in May!!).

We have received two invita-
tions for S u m m e r Picnics
kAbroad! Mr. and Mrs. Larry
Erlandson of S.F. have invited
us all to their new home in Palo
Alto for a Picnic. We know you
all want to accept. The date, ad-
dress and route will be announc-
ed later. Thanks. The other in-
vitation was received at our
February Party when Mr. and
Mrs. Einar W. Johnson, res-
idents of Martinez for the past
20 years made their lst appear-
ance at a gathering of Icelanders
in this area. They were so thrill-
ed with this experience that they
asked to be permitted to hold
one of our Picnics at their home.
We are very happy to share
these events, and shall certainly
schedule one of our Summer
Picnics with them at Martinez.

The special feature of our last
picnic was, of course, the pin-
ning of the Medal on Fru Sigga
Benonys. We were told that the
ceremony was very impressive.
After the singing of “Drauma-
landid” by Margrethe Thorlaks-
son, Einar Kvaran who had just
come from Iceland to continue
his studies at the University
told us “the how and the why”
of the granting of this Decora-
tion. Fru Sigga responded very
fittingly after the Consul had
officially presented the Badge
and the Diploma of the Order
of the Falcon of Iceland. The
Ceremony ended by all present
singing the Icelandic and Am-
erican National Anthems. The
occasion was further enhanced
by the presence of Fru Sigga’s
niece, Sigridur Steingrimsdottir,
recently arrived from Reykja-
vik.

Were you surprised when the
news flashed across that Gwen
Albert had suddenly returned
from London, England to marry
Dr. Larry H. Arnsteen? The date
was February 25th. Congratula-
tions! A formal reception of the
Doctor’s many friends and as-
sociates is in progress today in
S.F. at the home of Mrs. W. A.
Albert (Thora). We hope to
welcome these newlyweds into
our Icelandic community on the
27th. Welcome.
On March 3rd, your scribes
and Margrethe were invited to
dine with the Melsteds at Santa
Rosa. It was a Farewell Dinner
for Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Melsted
of Kelowna, B.C., who have been
spending part of this winter in
these parts. It’s a grand exper-
ience to be thus taken into a
family group to share in their
good times.—Thus the bound-
aries of our Parish have grown
to include invitations from
Santa Rosa, Napa, Sacramento,
all around the Bay Area and
along the line south to Santa
Cruz! Parishioners as far south
as Los Angeles and Long Beach
are also extending invitations,
but when we will be able to take
to the road again on such long
