Dr. Sveinn Olafur Thompson

weather. If a call came, he
was ready.
There are those who will
tell of his sincerity of purpose
and of his understanding of
the circumstances of sorne of
his patients. The truth of the
matter is that the criterion by
which he acted was human
need rather than expectation
of payment for services ren-
dered. And the people re-
spected him for his help, his
understanding and his con-
sideration. And the commun-
ity tried to show its high re-
gard for him and its respect.
I seem to recall one occasion
on which the whole com-
munity banded together and
presented the Doctor with a
new car to take the place of
the old one, which had long
since passed its prime. A short
time ago the people on Hecla
Island held a special obser-
vance in recognition of his
many years of dedicated ser-
vice, and presented him with
an illuminated address, ex-
pressing thereby their deep
appreciation for his faithful-
ness to them and their needs.
And some four years ago the
provincial government pre-
sented him with a Golden Boy
Award, — an award reserved
for those who have given out-
standing service as Manitob-
ans.
But it wasn’t honours that
Dr. Thompson strove for. He
strove rather to serve the
needs of the people in this
community. This was the
place where he preferred to
live. These people were the
people among whom he chose
to live and work. This was
the community he wished to
serve.
In this community Dr.
Thompson had many friends,
and he in turn, was a friend
to all. He couldn’t think of
any other place where he
might prefer to live. There
was no other place.
Dr. Thompson was a man
of dignity and worth. His
commitment was one of ser-
vice, and his love was for his
friends and neighbors. His
taste was for simple things,
— the daily tasks of living.
He enjoyed life. And he loved
people. He was dedicated to
his home and family. Among
the last things he did was to
give a finishinig touch to the
yard around his home. The
day before he died he was out
in his yard raking up some
grass that he had cut, as was
his wont to do, to keep his
yard in shape.
. Dr. Thompson died as he
had lived, — without ostenta-
tion or fanfare, — doing the
simple' things of life, which
usually make life so mean-
ingful.
We are gathered now in
tribute to this good man, and
we grieve that he is gone. At
the same time, and in a spirit
of love, the people in this
community are glad that he
lived, and to have had the
privilege of knowing him, and
to have had association with
him, — to have been able to
turn to him in time of need,
knowing that he would al-
ways respond.
And now we mourn that he
is gone. But we know also
that his years had become
many. — He was in his 79th.
year. — It would onily have
been with increasing diffi-
culty that he would have tried
to ainswer calls upon him. But
he would have tried. That we
are sure of.
But the time had come for
him to lay down the burden
of work. The years had taken
their toll. He had fulfilled his
destiny. We mourn that he
should be gone, but we rejoice
at having known so royal a
soul.
It has been one of the priv-
ileges of our lives to have
known him, spoken with him,
walked b e s i d e him, taken
him by the hand and enjoyed
his ministrations when the
need arose.
We can truly say with the
poet, —
These were royal-hearted,
rare,
Memory keeps with
loving care
Deeds they did, and tales
they told.
And so I conclude my
words of tribute to Dr. Steinn
Oalfur Thompson, and in clos-
ing I wish to read a poem by

ply “An Epitaph, which I feel
to be peculiarly suited to the
person and the character of
our friend.
AN EPITAPH
“Here lies a truly
honest man!”
One whose conscience
was a thing
That troubled neither
church nor king;
Sermons he heard yet not
so many
As left no time to
practise any;
He heard them reverently,
and then
His practice preached
them oe’r again;
His inner sermons
rather were
Those to the eye than
to the ear;
His prayers took their
price and strength
Not from the loudness
nor the length;
Peace which he loved in
life, did lend
Her hand to bring him
to his end;
When age and death called
for the score,
No surfeits were to
reckon for;
Death tore not, then,
but without strife,
Gently untwined his
thread of life.
What remains, friend,
but that thou
Write these lines upon
thy brow,
And by his fair
example’s light
Burn in thy imitation
bright?
His better epitaph
shall be
His life, still kept alive
in thee.
Dr. Philip M. Peíursson.
Ung að árum fluttist hún
frá hrjóstrugri strönd Vest-
fjarðaskagans til vonarlands-
ins í vestri. Á annesjum
heimahaganna brenna vitar
víða, til aðvörunar skipum, og
vegsögu til hafna. Hún vann
gott dagsverk sem eiginkona
og móðir, og varð samferða-
sveit sinni til blessunar. Vér
trúum því að hún sé nú flutt
yfir í annan og betri heim.
Vér drjúpum höfði, og bless-
um minningu hennar, um leið
og vér óskum eiginmanni
hennar og öðrum ástvinum
þess, að þeir megi finna hugg-
un í þeirri fullvissu að „vin-
arins hönd er viss og föst, og
vitinn á ströndu logar.“
