Lundar Branch keeps busy
By Helga Sigurdson,
Presldent, Lundar Chapter
We are not a large chapter and we
were saddened, during the year by the
loss of two of our pioneer members.
Hjortur Hjartarson had served as
president of our chapter for some
years and had close ties with his fami-
ly in Iceland. We will miss his fluent
Icelandic and his singing in the choir.
John Guttormson was the last surviv-
ing member of the committee formed
to celebrate Lundar’s Diamond Jubi-
lee in 1947 and he later published the
two Diamond Jubilee Books with pic-
tures and histories of the pioneers.
They were both proud of their Icelan-
dic heritage and were strong support-
ers of the chapter.
Fortunately our membership has
increased to 46 and we look forward
to a bright future. At our last meeting,
2 month old Riley James Jón Brand-
son, son of Wanda and Jim Brandson,
became our youngest member and the
4th generation of the family to join
our chapter.
We continue with our card parties,
Trump, Whist and Icelandic Whist
once a month and find this a warm
and rewarding way of keeping in con-
tact - mixing business with pleasure.
We held a raffle of three donated
items and were pleased to be able to
deposit $527 in the bank. No one
seems to mind buying 3 tickets for a
“looney”, so it was a painless way of
raising funds. We also sold the
Heritage calendars which were very
popular and also gave us some rev-
enue.

The chapter received an invitation
to attend the 40th Anniversary
Celebration of the chair in Icelandic
at the University of Manitoba. There
were 7 members able to attend Dr.
Finnbogi Guðmundsson’s lecture and
take part in the receptions.
We support Lögberg-Heimskringla
with a donation and solicit advertise-
ments for special editions of the
paper. It is important that we keep
this tie with our heritage. Many new
words can be added to our vocabu-
lary when we read “Sigga Vigga”!
We had 5 teenagers, 2 boys and 3
girls, attend the Icelandic Language
Camp at.Gimli. Two had attended the
previous year and all are anxious to
go again. They enjoyed being exposed
to a bit of Viking history, Icelandic
food and customs and even learned
some words in Icelandic as well as
Icelandic songs. We all heed to sup-
port this camp and make it possible
for our youngsters to attend and to
mix and mingle with others from
across Canada.
Our Chapter sent two delegates to
the Annual Meeting in Vancouver in
April, 1991, David Stevenson and
Warida Erikson-Brandson who was
our youth delegate. This was Wanda’s
fírst time and she found it a learning
experience to meet with other youth
from across Canada. The youth are
our future.
Several young people in Lundar
have shown an interest in learning
the Icelandic language. As they are

employed during the day, they find it
difficult to attend the Thursday night
classes at the Scandinavian Centre in
Winnipeg. They have to leave work
early and get home late. Enquiries
were made to the University of Mani-
toba regarding a “Travelling Instruc-
tor”. The interest sounds encourag-
ing.
During July, one Saturday was set
aside as Heritage Day. Our chapter
took part with a display table, Icelan-
dic costumes and food. There was
much interest shown in our own
calendars, books, pictures and knit
wear. Next year, we plan to take part
again.
We need to keep our contact with
friends and relatives in Iceland. “Pen
Pals” should be encouraged. This
exchange leads to more interest in
and understanding of our culture.
