larly memorable. My mother had
made dolls for us, with embroidered
faces and dressed in a beautiful dress,
a coat and a hat. No Ballroom Barbie
could match this doll, or be cherished
as much as this doll was. Later in the
evening we would have hot chocolate
with whipped cream and cooldes and
our joy was complete.
After moving to Reylkjavík at the
age of nine our Christmas celebrations
were much the same, but the sur-
roundings were much different. Living
in one of the new suburbs in
Reykjavík, we now had a Christmas
celebration at school with skits,
singing and walking around the
Christmas tree and with a real
Jólasveinn visiting. There were bright
city lights and the sounds were now
those of cars. You might even say that
some of the wonder was gone.
