Abstract.
Some investigations hafa been carried
out on the Norway pout (Trisopterus es-
viarkii (Nilsson)) in Icelandic waters in
1969 and 1970. Otoliths were collected for
age determination and length measure-
nients and other pertinent observations
were made. The present article shows the
preliminary results of these investigations.
Norway pout occur along the southeast,
south and west coasts north to Stranda-
grunn and stray individuals hafa been re-
corded from Eyjafjörður and Skjálfandi
in the north. Norway pout are vei'y com-
nxon off the south- and southwest coast
where, according to SÆMUNDSSON
(1926, 1929), spawning takes place fi’om
late March to May.
Noi’way pout may reach a total length
of 25 cm and an age of 5 yeai’s. Females
gi’ow faster than males. In the samples
2, 3 and even 4 years old fish are most com-
nion. The spawning normally begins at the
age of 2 years.
