Local artists and art lovers have proved
that unused downtown buildings pend-
ing demolition can easily be put to
creative use with a little help from the
imagination. New and raw galleries
pop up, up-and-coming artists get more
opportunities to display their work and
the public gets a chance to view uncon-
ventional exhibitions. The basement at
Café Hljómalind is now experiencing
such a makeover as Páll Björnsson and
20 artist friends of his have invaded
the space and will open a new gallery
on November 9. The project is named
Smátími and the basement will be an
ongoing creative venue for the next
three months. The plan is to present
new works by young artists each week
and have a grand opening party every
Friday. Each exhibition will be on dis-
play for six to seven days and a book
about the project will be published at
the end of the three months.
The opening exhibition, titled ‘Re-
construction: What the hell happened?
√M Jafna gegnur upp’ is a collabora-
tion between artists Páll and Steinunn
Gunnlaugsdóttir and features installa-
tions as well as performances. The cel-
ebration starts at 19:00.
