There was a time when, if you knew Icelandic dance, you knew
of Helgi Tómasson—likely you envisioned a swarming country
of master ballet dancers of impeccable grace and timing. In
recent years, Icelandic dance has moved in different directions.
The performances of the Iceland Dance Company, a company
dedicated exclusively to modern, have attracted attention.
Better and better every year, this is the tenth anniversary
of the artistic direction of former dancer Katrín Hall, and the
season looks to continue her commitment to diversity and
involvement in the European dance community.
The season begins in February with commissioned pieces
by celebrated Portuguese choreographer Rui Horten and Dan-
ish choreographer Didi Veldman.
Even if you aren’t particularly interested in dance, the
unique projects at ID may pull you in: the company often tries
to strike a blend of dramatics and dance. Visitors to Iceland can
experience an acting tradition that goes back centuries blended
with the most modern of dance without having to fight with a
language they may not understand.
